Holy Mother, grant that the wounds of the Crucified one are driven deep into my heart.

Share with me the agony of your wounded Son who deigned to suffer so much for me.

Let me share your pious tears to weep for Him that is on the cross for as long as I live.

To stand beside the cross and share your grief is my desire.

O Virgin among virgins. do not turn away from me, let me weep with you.

이탈리아 작곡가 페르골레시는 어려서 소아마비로 다리를 절었고 결핵으로 26세에 요절했다. 그가 죽음을 앞에 두고 수도원에서 마지막으로 작곡한 작품이 Stabat Mater인데 이 곡은 예수님이 십자가에 못박혀 죽고 난 후 어머니 마리아의 심정을 표현한 곡이다. 때문에 Stabat Mater를 듣고 있으면 고통과 애절함과 슬픔이 느껴진다. 하지만 내가 느끼는 고통, 애절함, 슬픔은 결국 예수님의 희생과 구원을 믿는 다는 것이고 이 곡은 나에게 큰 위로가 되는 것 같다.

 

이 곡은 Andreas Scholl의 Stabat Mater 음반 중 9번 트랙 "Sancta Mater, istud agas"이다. 이 곡을 소프라노 Barbara Boney와 함께 불렀는데 소프라노와 카운터테너의 음색이 정말 잘 조화된 것 같아서 Stabat Mater 중 내가 가장 많이 듣는 곡이다.
